Experienced solicitor is firm’s first appointment since acquisition

An experienced solicitor has joined a law firm’s growing Family Law team in what is a milestone appointment for the company.

Sarah Tweedie, who has worked at law practices across the North of England for the past 17 years, has joined Northumberland-based Nicholson Portnell Solicitors, becoming the firm’s first recruit since it was acquired by Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors earlier this year.

Sarah, who grew up in the Tyne Valley, works across all aspects of Family Law and has been a Resolution-accredited solicitor since 2013. The accreditation reflects her specialism in working with couples going through a divorce or separation to ensure proceedings are as amicable as possible.

Sarah Tweedie has joined Nicholson Portnell Solicitors.

Based out of Nicholson Portnell’s Hexham office, she will work closely with Cartmell Shepherd’s established team of legal experts on behalf of clients across Northumberland, Cumbria and the wider UK.

Sarah said: “The company’s focus on staff wellbeing and career development really appealed to me. Everyone has been really welcoming, with an open door policy which encourages people to work closely together as a team.

“It’s an exciting time to be joining the company following the amalgamation with Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors which has enhanced the services Nicholson Portnell can offer.

“It’s important to the people of the Tyne Valley that Nicholson Portnell maintains its local presence and delivers its expert services from the Hexham office, while also having a much bigger team across multiple offices who can bring specialist legal knowledge and expertise.

“I’m really excited to be joining Cartmell Shepherd’s established and well-regarded Family Law team, and to support its continued growth by working closely with some amazing people.”

Sarah’s legal career started on Teesside, and she has worked for some renowned firms across Harrogate, Northumberland and Newcastle, before returning home to the Tyne Valley to work in Hexham.

She has specialised in Family Law throughout her career, dealing with a wide variety of issues affecting families and their relationships.

Sarah Tweedie is welcomed to Nicholson Portnell Solicitors by Senior Partner Richard Nelson.

Sarah said: “Family Law is so varied which makes every day a new challenge, and I love meeting lots of different people and building trusted relationships with clients.

“A case may take many months and you speak to clients regularly, so you become more than just a solicitor. You act as a confidante too because you are dealing with very emotional issues, as well as legal matters.

“We strive for the best outcomes for the whole family, and we work closely with them to ensure this because our aim is to avoid acrimonious situations. Ex-partners often still spend a lot of time with one another after separation whether they are dropping the kids off or running a business together, so finding the best solution for clients and keeping things as amicable as possible is the outcome we work towards.

“There are always some cases where this is not possible and where, it is required,we also represent our clients in court.”

Following its acquisition of Nicholson Portnell in April 2024, Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors has offices in Hexham and Haltwhistle in Northumberland and five bases in Cumbria at Carlisle (two locations), Brampton, Cockermouth and Penrith.
